An International Symposium on Oral Health Education and Research was held, on December 10-11th, 2011, at Balikpapan (Kalimantan Island), Indonesia which co-organized by Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia and Niigata University Faculty of Dentistry. There were 64 oral and poster presentations attended by 300 Indonesian and Japanese participants.

The Symposium was welcomed by Dean (Professor Bambang Irawan) Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia and Dean (Professor Takeyasu Maeda) Niigata University Faculty of Dentistry and followed by congratulatory message from Balikpapan Mayor and Dayak Tribe Dances.

One of the Symposium session was on Human Resource Development for Global Oral Health. First, Visiting Professor Yupin Songpaisan (who joined Niigata University in October, and was ex-Dean of Faculty of Dentistry, Thammasat University, Thailand) explained the international view of need and significance of specialists in global oral health science. Followed by Associate Professor Hiroshi Ogawa (Preventive Dentistry) reported on our global oral health education/international practice and the future challenges as well as the success of the WHO Collaborating Centre for translation of oral health so far. Subsequently, Professor Peter Carlsson (University of Malmö, Sweden), from years of experience in teaching PBL, gave a lecture on Curriculum Development for International Education in training of specialists. The session concluded that there are many challenges to develop educational curriculum for experts in global oral health based on the global standard.
