Patients who visit this hospital for the first time are given preliminary examinations and are introduced to appropriate clinics. Clinical training of undergraduate students is also undertaken.
This division treats patients who require comprehensive care centering upon preservative dentistry and prosthodontics, and refers the patient to other specialist divisions whenever necessary. It also provides medical students with clinical training in the last year of study.
(2) Secondary treatment (Clinical division)
Oral health protection and promotion are essential to maintain physical and mental health through life, and also for the quality of life. In the Department of Preventive Dentistry oral health counseling, instruction, education and health management in addition to professional preventive care are provided for all ages from infants to elderly people, including not only persons without oral diseases but also patients who have regained oral health by means of dental treatment.
It contributes to the quality of life to be able to eat meals with our own teeth throughout life. The major cause of tooth loss is dental caries and periodontal disease. Our department makes a special treatment of dental caries and pulp disease.
The foundation of periodontal therapies is in a state of change. The Department of Periodontics aims towards the establishment of therapeutics based on the most recent advances in dental sciences.
- Regenerating and reconstructing periodontal tissue
The therapeutic scope is to promote the replacement of damaged periodontal tissue through the use of bone grafts such as beta -TCP or HA, and guided tissue/bone regeneration techniques.- A comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach
Occlusal treatment, orthodontics, implant are applied in collaboration with other clinics of the Dental Hospital.- Examination, diagnosis and prognosis
The examinations consist of the assessment of host immune response, markers for inflammation and biology and irnmunobiology.Diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region such as malformation, deformities, traumas, infections, benign and malignant tumors, cysts, temporomandibular disorders, diseases of the oral mucosa, salivary glands and peripheral nerves, blood diseases and so forth are performed.
Diagnosis and treatment for the various Kinds of odontogenic and/or non-odontogenic diseases in the oral and maxillofacial region such as malformations, deformities, benign and malignant tumors, traumas, infections, cysts, blood diseases and so forth, including diseases of the temporomandibular joints, oral mucosa, salivary glands and peripheral nerves, are performed.
For patients with dental and maxillofacial defects, our prosthodontic treatments are based upon occlusion and application of related sciences from a physiological point of view, measurement of mandibular movements, EMG and roentgenocinemagraphy with X-ray TV are typical examples. For elderly and medically compromised patients, special prosthodontic care is given.
Our department provides clinical management for oral implants, TMD and metal allergy in addition to general prosthetics such as crowns, bridges, partial or complete dentures, etc.
Irregularities of the teeth and wrong occlusal contact between the upper and lower dental arches are called abnormal occlusion (it was once called malocclusion). The following disorders win be induced by the various types of malocclusion.
Decline of the masticatory function, disorder of pronunciation, asymmetric growth of jaws, dental caries, periodontal diseases, temporomandibular disorders, trauma, psychological disorders, aesthetic impairment, difficulties in the treatment of teeth.
The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to eliminate these disorders caused by malocclusion and to prevent them.
Guidance of tooth emergence and facial growth, tooth alignment in the dental arches in permanent dentition, preprosthodontic tooth movement, perio-orthodontic treatment are included in orthodontic treatment throughout life.
Orthodontic objectives are the best balance and harmony of the facial lines, stability of dentures after treatment, healthy mouth tissues, and efficient chewing mechanism. Adult patients who seek a esthetic impairment are tremendously increasing.
Orthodontic clinic actively joins the team approach for patients with cleft lip and palate, and jaw deformities.Caries prevention and treatment for children, treatment of traumatic teeth for children, dental treatment for children with general diseases, and occlusal guidance to normal permanent dentition.
- Diagnostic procedures are performed with plain X-ray films (including dental, panoramic, plain skull, etc.), X-ray computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasorkography in the diagnosis of diverse diseases in the maxillofacial region.
- Patients with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer receive care for oral hygiene in outpatient facilities.
The Department of Dental Anesthesiology conducts general anesthetic management during orofacial surgery in the operating room and during the preoperative period. In the outpatient department, management of patients with any systemic disease during dental treatment, and a pain clinic for neuralgia patients with and palsy in the orofacial area are undertaken. Emergency care is provided for emergency cases arising in the Dental Hospital.
This newly-established special Dental clinic consists of three sections. They are treatment sections for temporomandibular disorders, jaw deformities and handicapped patients. Each section aims at the establishment of an effective multi-disciplinary approach to the management of such patients.
Treatment team for cleft lip and palate patients. Cleft lip and palate patients have not only dentofacial deformities, but also speech and masticatory impediments. They should be treated by team approach. They need to be treated by various specialists following a consistent treatment plan. Therefore the treatment team should consist of the specialists concerned. Patients are documented and treatment plans for the patients are determined through regular case presentation.
Diagnosis and treatment of prevalent speech disorders in children such as cleft palate speech, functional articulation disorder, stuttering, delayed speech development are undertaken.
(4) Central clinical facilities
Laboratory examinations of blood, urine and microorganisms, as well as cardiac and lung functions are routinely performed.
Histopathologic examinations of biopsy samples and operation materials including rapid frozen section examination, and oral cytology are performed. Examination by autopsy is also performed.
Supply Center manages dental instruments and sanitary materials, supplies them to each department in the dental hospital. Dental instruments returned from each department are sterilized and stocked in the Supply Center.
The Central Laboratory of the hospital is provides a wide range of technical facilities mainly to the prosthetic department for making dentures, crowns, bridges, etc. Furthermore, laboratory technology for prosthodontic cleft management and oral implantology is advancing. The latest goal of this section is to improve knowledge and technology to facilitate laboratory work in fast developing oral implants. Laboratory facilities are also provided to the departments of operative dentistry and endodontics the special clinic division, oral surgery and radiology. Motivated technicians are supervised for further training after their gradation.
This section provides the clinics with useful data about stomatognathic functions, such as mandibular movement, electromyogram of masticatory muscles, shape of teeth, occluding sound biting force and so on.
'The dental hospital, includes wards (11 rooms, 40 beds) for the diagnosis and treatment of in-patients. This section is equipped with facilities to provide medical care for in-patients with various oral and maxillofacial diseases such as malformation, deformity, trauma, cysts, tumors, infections.
Orofacial add implant surgeries, also dental treatment for handicapped patients or patients with any systemic diseases are performed in the operating room. General anesthesia and sedation for surgery and dental treatments are performed by dental anesthetists.
The pharmaceutical division dispenses prescribed medication and prepares drugs for prescription, including mixtures not directly available on the market. Stock management and 'insurance of quality are also its responsibility, in addition to providing information and research data concerning the proper use of medication to the medical staff.
The nursing division provides nursing care for all departments and in the central clinical facilities (wards, sterilization section, central operating room and special clinic).
