Keynote lecture

Health Through Oral Health Collaborative Education, Research and Practices: General Concepts.
Prof Murray THOMSON (University of Otago, New Zealand) read by Prof Katsumi UOSHIMA (Niigata University)
It was explained that we had to implement regenerative dental medicine as the latest medical technology with serious ethics and at the same time continued conventional dental medicine/oral hygiene because the both must be profit for patients in near future.

Symposium 1: Regenerative Dental Medicine

This time we welcomed not only researchers in dentistry but also epithelial re-engineering researchers such as gastric surgery and ophthalmology, and researchers of “fish collagen” who are applying plenty of natural marine sources to medicine, so the topics were very unique for us.

Chair: Prof Kenji IZUMI (Niigata University) and Assoc/Prof Premjit ARPORNMAEKLONG (Prince of Songkla University)

  • PRF in enhancement of hard and soft tissue regeneration - From research to clinical application:Assoc/Prof Prisana Pripatnanont (Prince of Songkla University)
  • Clinical Applications of a Tissue-Engineered Oral Mucosa -- Tribulation and Tribute--.Dr Hiroko KATO (University of Michigan, USA)
  • A Novel View for Epithelial Stem Cells Biology that is obtained from the Comparison with Hematopoietic Stem Cells. Dr Terumasa UMEMOTO (Tokyo Women's Medical University, Japan)

Symposium 2: Global Oral Health Science Education
Chair: Prof Yupin SONGPAISAN

The committee of curriculum development at preventive dentistry (chief: Prof Yupin SONGPAISAN) spent 3 years to build up curriculum of “PhD Course in Global Oral Health Science.” Niigata University speakers explained the purpose and contents of this course in order to brush up the drafted curriculum. Prof Takashi TAKATA (Hiroshima University) introduced the implementation of globalization at the level of undergraduate students of Hiroshima University. Indonesia and Thai speakers elaborated their externship program. The topics were very helpful to improve the curriculum because our committee is planning to include coursework in English and practical externship.

Dean Meeting :Education and Research Collaboration

A breakfast meeting was held with 22 Deans and Executives from ASEAN dental schools. Dean Prof MAEDA of Niigata University expressed appreciation for their cooperation of the students/researchers/faculties exchange programs, and broadly discussed for further mutual benefits and effectiveness.

Special Lecture

In November 2013, Dr. Atsushi OHAZAMA joined the staff of oral anatomy as an Assoc/Professor, Niigata University Faculty of Dentistry, and gave a special lecture titled “The Role of OFD1 in Tooth Development.” He had worked as a principal investigator at King’s College London for a long time. His lecture was very enthusiastic and inspired the interest for oral histology and embryology of young researchers.

Research Presentation

Many young researchers of Niigata University experienced “study abroad,” supported by “Institutional Program for Young Researcher Overseas Visits." The session was held in order to provide an opportunity to present each other their results in foreign countries.

There were 25 oral presentations and 21 poster presentations from dental schools of seven universities- Niigata University, Osaka University, Kyushu University, Prince of Songkla University, Thammasat University, University of Indonesia and University of Gadjha Mada. It was the first experience for some PhD students to present their research in English, and they were stimulated by active discussion. This opportunity would improve their career development as scientists.

Oral presentation by Dr. Jun NIHARA, Niigata University. Chair: Dr. Fumiko HARADA

Poster presentation by a student of Prince of Songkla University. Prof Hideo MIYAZAKI was discussing.
